BASICS:
Lincoln Square is a neighborhood located on the North Side of Chicago. Greater Lincoln Square encompasses the smaller neighborhoods of Ravenswood Gardens, Ravenswood Manor, Bowmanville and Budlong Woods. Although it is sometimes known by these other names, the City of Chicago officially designated it as Lincoln Square in 1925.
HOUSING:
Ever since the area was developed more than a century ago, Lincoln Square has been a desirable neighborhood to live in. Behind the busy avenues lie quiet, tree-lined streets where wood-frame Victorian houses sit along side classic Chicago two-flats and three-flats, courtyard buildings, brick and greystone. In addition, there are many condominiums in courtyard buildings and renovated three- to six-flat walk-ups.
LOCATION:
Lincoln Square is bounded by Foster Avenue on the north, Montrose Avenue on the south, Ravenswood Avenue on the east and the Chicago River on the west.
HISTORY:
Lincoln Square's history dates back to the 1850s and 1860s, when farmers settled what was prairie and farmland at the time. In the early 1900s, the neighborhood experienced major growth, stimulated by the installation of electric streetcars along its main roads and by the establishment of the "El" train in 1907 (now the CTA Brown Line).
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, nearly 40,000 residents live side by side on Lincoln Square's tree-lined streets and patronize its mixture of independent and one-of-a-kind businesses.
SHOPPING :
It's not hard to shop locally, because you can get virtually any product or service you need without even leaving the neighborhood. A great mix of independent and nationally known stores sells everything from toys to tools, art to armchairs, CDs to cappuccinos.
DINING:
From German to Greek, French to American, Mexican to Italian, your choice of cuisine is just a few steps away. Whether you're looking for fine dining, a casual meal at an outdoor cafe, or a drink with friends at a local bar, Lincoln Square offers a plethora of restaurants and bars to fill your needs.
EVENTS:
Close-knit residents gather for events year round in the area's parks, churches and public squares. From art fairs to the weekly summer farmer's market, these events bring both neighbors and visitors together. Annual festivals like the Chicago Folk & Roots music festival and the German-American Fest draw crowds of people from all over the Midwest and beyond.
ZIP CODES:
Chicago's Lincoln Square zip codes include parts of 60625 & 60640.
