Chicago's Gold Coast neighborhood is the premier residential area on the city's North Side. Chicago's Gold Coast is the nation's second wealthiest urban neighborhood, surpassed only by New York City's Central Park East. The housing is a mixture of 19th century brownstones, mansions and mid-century classic high-rises, mostly built around the 1960s. Most are set within beautiful residential areas. Many have a wonderful view of Lake Michigan; and all have a close proximity to the Loop (Chicago's downtown area). At North Avenue the neighborhood overlooks Lincoln Park. Many of the homes in the Gold Coast are designated Chicago landmarks.
LOCATION:
Chicago's Gold Coast neighborhood is generally defined north to south from Oak Street up to Lincoln Park (at North Avenue) and east to west from Lake Michigan to Old Town (at Wells Street). It is only minutes away from downtown, the financial district, Navy Pier and Art Institute of Chicago among other Chicago treasures.
HISTORY:
One of the oldest and wealthiest areas in Chicago, the Gold Coast dates back to 1882 when Potter Palmer (a civic leader) bought land on what would later become north Lake Shore Drive. There Palmer built the first of many of the area's mansions. Within a decade, property values in the Gold Coast increased by 400%, and it became the home of Chicago's most-affluent citizens.

Oak Street is the Gold Coast's boutique row, and shops include Marilyn Miglin, Ultimo, Jil Sander, Hermes, Prada, Pratesi, Judith Ripka, St. John's, Donald Pliner, Sulka and Barney's New York department store.
Right around the corner begins North Michigan Avenue - Chicago's Magnificent Mile. From Tiffany to Filene's Basement, you will find a complete range of retailers. This is in addition to the country's best known specialty chains flagship stores such as: Crate and Barrel, Borders Books, H&M, The Gap, Pottery Barn, Ralph Lauren, Banana Republic, Niketown, Disney, American Girl.
